Chritmas is Coming!

We had a crazy busy weekend of Christmas fun! Friday night, we went to the kids Christmas extravaganza at Gateway Church. Izzy LOVED it when the kids started dancing to a jazzy version of Joy to the World onstage... she started bopping and dancing with her arms in my lap. We went outside to the petting zoo after the performance, and were thrilled to see little lambs, alpacas, and a donkey!

We wanted to go on the sleigh ride and the little train, but Izzy declared it cold, so we left before the frigid temps (it was in the low 50s...) could bring on a full meltdown.

On Saturday, we got up for Christmas portraits... AWFUL. We now understand why Kiddie Kandids in Babies R Us can charge as much as they do... the other places REALLY don't have what it takes to photograph children. Alas.

After a nap, we went up to the Bass Pro Shop for our pictures with Santa. All the way up there, we talked to the girls about Santa. They told us that he says "Ho ho ho," and when we asked what we were going to do when we saw him, they said, "Lap!" (Their picture with him from last year is up on the fridge, so we've been talking about the protocol for a while.) I even pulled out the old bribery trick and suggested that if they were good girls for Santa, they could have a piece of candy.

The line was long... and filled with fun treats. The girls begged for an oversized jar of cheesy puffs, but I stayed strong and said, "No way."

When we got to the front of the girls, a juggling elf elicited smiles, and even Santa seemed exciting... until Mom and Dad dropped the twins into his lap and stepped back. I'll post pictures as soon as I secure the digital rights (not posted on Santa's Wonderland yet), but let me just say that it wasn't pretty. Oh well.

Sunday evening, we went to Clear Lake Methodist Church for their live Nativity... and it was fantastic! They even had live camels!

(Pardon the waterspots... it was foggy...)

The girls really seemed to love it... the sheep were VERY big and a little intimidating, but Izzy held my hand and pulled me toward them. They were brave when the wise men offered them treasures, and they really enjoyed the Bethlehem town center where they got to help grind cinnamon, sample some goat cheese, and touch some papyrus paper.

In educational news, we're teaching the girls their states. They are both VERY good at pointing out Texas, but Izzy usually loses interest after that. Abby can usually point to Texas, Montana, Illinois, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, and most recently, Nevada. I taught them to say, "Las Vegas, Baby," when they hear Nevada, which prompted the unfolding of a funny little anecdote...

Izzy happened to be holding her baby doll when we were practicing our states. I asked her where Nevada was, and Abby said, "Las Vegas, Baby," (or, to be honest, a baby-version of that). Izzy grabbed Baby's hand and then pointed to Nevada. I asked "Baby" if she knew where California was, and lo and behold, Baby knew! It turns out that Baby is much more interested in identifying the states (correctly!) than Izzy is. I can't decide whether to exploit this, or to just push Izzy to do it herself. Silly, stubborn little girl...

Oh dear, Daddy needs to teach the girls that it's just "Vegas, baby" and not "Las Vegas, baby." Perhaps we need to plan a trip to clear things up. If only my birthday were coming in about 10 weeks.
