The girls love to run in the backyard. There's a fairly open space between the garden and the slide, and those seem to be their go-to spots when they run. I was sitting by the garden the other day and thought I'd try to teach them about racing. I told them to stand by the garden, and when I said, "Ready, Set, GO!" they should both run as fast as they could to the slide. They didn't quite seem to understand the concept of competition, because when I got to "GO!" they reached for each other and held hands running and laughing their way to the slide. I love, love, love being a twin-mom!!!
I didn't have my camera at the moment, so no videos of the non-race, but we did take some Saturday when we were doing yardwork. The girls LOVE their big girls swings. They can swing on them by themselves on their tummies, but have to have help to get up there in a seated position. We know that they want help getting on the swings when they come up to us yelling, "Buns! Buns!" (Our "nice" word for their bottoms.)
As a disclaimer, this one wasn't a spontaneous counting episode... Dan was standing behind me counting with his fingers :)
The girls love lizards, and our yard has no short supply of them (Disclaimer: they may officially be geckos or anoles, but we will generically call them lizards until I have the time and inclination to key them out; if any herpetologists want to elucidate me, please feel free and we'll get the girls' scientific naming skills branched out beyond Tursips truncatus and Hippocampus sp.) Especially now that the sun has started to warm things up, the lizards are out in view on the patio almost every day, and the girls love to watch them. Abby is pretty brave and will try to touch them "nicely." Izzy wants to be brave, but is just not that into getting up close and personal with creepy crawlies... but she definitely wants to watch them. The biologist in me is so proud :)
Dan treated us to blueberry pancakes Sunday morning, which was a treat. The girls had a bad cough, so we played hooky from church so as not to infect the rest of the congregation, but they seemed to be feeling pretty well overall. They love to "help" from their cooking tower. Their favorite thing to do is "dump" things from cans or measuring cups, and they know that if we've put eggs into something, they can't sample the wares until they've been cooked.
The learning tower comes in handy even when we're not actually cooking. The girls got an awesome pretend cookie set for their birthday, and they love to cut the dough, cook the cookies, and decorate them with frosting. They're starting to really understand the concept of "pretend." We started teaching it with their pretend food that came with their kitchen, in an effort to keep it all out of their mouths. Now they pretend to eat, pretend to drink from their tea set, and pretend to take naps with their babies. This morning, Izzy tried to get Mike, our big old cat, to pretend to eat from spoons. He's not thrilled about it, but he's a fairly good sport.
In the video, Izzy is cutting her cookie dough, and Abby is trying to get up into the learning tower. She's saying, "Up" and then blowing raspberries, and Izzy is responding, "Down," probably just to be contrary. Izzy is usually much more deft with her cutting, and Abby is similarly usually much more nimble at getting into her tower, but they were having fun and I miraculously had the camera at hand :)
