Happy Autumn!

The weather is still hot, hot, hot, so that we almost forgot the start of the new season, but knowing that cooler days are coming soon, we head down to the beach for a dinner picnic with Dan after work today.  The girls were in heaven.  Izzy found a hermit crab all on her own and they practiced running on the beach for the 1K that they'll be running in November.

Izzy got a splinter in her foot when we were in Montana.  Dan and Nana worked hard to get it out, but we think there might still be a little piece in there, and she was complaining last night in the bath that it still hurt.  I took a look and said that we'd probably need to go to the doctor to make sure it wasn't infected.  Suddenly, Abby FREAKED OUT and started crying, "I don't want them to cut her foot off!"

Dan and I were bewildered for a moment... until we remembered Winter the Dolphin of Dolphin Tale fame.  In the movie, Winter's tail flukes become infected, leading the doctors to cut the tail at the peduncle (and ultimately, to fit winter with a prosthetic tail)...ergo, Abby's fear that an infection would lead to amputation.

It's funny to realize how limited the life experience of four-year-olds can be (at least first world four-year-olds).  Their only experience with "infection" has been in a movie, or in my superlative efforts to clean and keep clean the minor scrapes and cuts that they get playing in the back yard.

Here's to hoping that the doctor's visit today is much less dramatic than Abby envisions... :)
